The rainy wrath of the remnants of Hurricane Ian couldn’t keep our walkers away from the 10th annual HACA Fall Festival and Walk on Saturday, October 1.

The group was a little smaller, and we stayed on the paved trails at the park, but the rain stayed away for a few hours and allowed us to enjoy time together at Lake Accotink Park.

This year’s top individual fundraiser was Catherine Greene, and her team, Rock Steady for Eddie, also took home the honor of top fundraising team.

The walk brought in more than $75,000 to support HACA programs and activities. Thanks to all of the companies that supported us (see page 3 for a complete list of sponsors) and individuals that gave. We couldn’t do it without your support.

A special thanks as usual to the brothers of Chi Psi fraternity at George Mason University for showing up early and staying late to help us manage the event. They’ve been volunteering at HACA’s fall event since 2010, starting with our Ride or Stride event.

Thanks as well to Valerie Welch, who was on hand to photograph the event.

The day’s activities were slightly curtailed due to the unpredictability of the weather, and the walk itself took place on the pavement around the park marina. Because of the inclement conditions, there were very few other people at the park to compete with for sidewalk space!

The kids played some new games this year, and everyone enjoyed lunch from Willard’s Barbecue.

This was our last walk at Lake Accotink Park. The lake will be dredged in 2023, and we are currently working on a new site for next year.

Other top fundraising teams were The B’s Knees, which raised more than $1,600; Team HACA, which brought in more than $1,500; Saul’s Patrol, at $1,108 and The Little A Team, with $1,065 raised.

Other top individual fundraisers were Wesley Hay, with $1,000 raised; and Nina Duggan, who raised $722.

Our other walk day prize winners were

Best Team Name: The B’s Knees

Best Team T-shirt: Saul’s Patrol

Biggest Team: Rock Steady for Eddie

And the event passport drawing winner was Sharon Vergara.

Thanks again to all our event participants, fundraisers and sponsors! More information to come in early 2023 about next year’s new walk location and activities.

It’s also not too late—the walk website will be live thru October 31. Click here to donate.
