What Will We be Doing in Malawi?

This is it! We are on our way to Malawi in a few very short days! As you can see from the above schedule, there will be no wasted time when we are in country. We will be learning more about SHAD and SHAD will be learning about us to see if we are compatible.  Think of it like speed dating between chapters. I think it is important for us all to know what exactly is going on at these meetings, so I will break it down for you.

Understanding the Alphabet Soup

To get the most out of the schedule it's important to know the lingo!

  • WFH: World Federation of Hemophilia. WFH provides care for people with inherited bleeding disorders around the world. The organization partners with governments and hemophilia treatment centers to enhance knowledge through training and provide tools to identify, support, and treat people living with bleeding disorders in their communities, while promoting global advocacy and collaboration to achieve common goals.
  • SHAD: Society for Hemophilia and Allied Disorders, SHAD is the only hemophilia chapter in Malawi and the chapter that we will hopefully be Twinning with. SHAD is a patient-led advocacy and support organization formed in late 2014 in Malawi to help individuals with inherited bleeding disorders. The group works to improve rare disease awareness, treatment access, and medical care in low-income regions.
  • NMOCD: National Member Organization Capacity Development. This is a framework and set of guidelines used to help patient societies strengthen their structural, leadership, and operational capabilities
  • SWOT analysis: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. A SWOT analysis is a simple planning tool that helps a business or person to make better choices. It divides information into things you can control inside your group and things happening outside in the world.
  • HOT Twins: Hemophilia Organization Twinning: These partners emerging and established hemophilia patient organizations for a maximum of four years to share knowledge and skills in areas such as patient education, outreach, fundraising, and the other aspects of operating a successful hemophilia patient organization.
