Dear *{{Informal Name}}*,

Thank you for signing up for our twinning emails. My hope is that these will be informative as well as fun.  Over the next few months, I am going to walk you through the Twinning process, introduce you to our "Twin" and update you on our progress. If you have any questions about the program, please feel free to reach out to me at admin@hacacares.com. All of our past emails will be archived on our website.

What happened in Malawi?

After a 20-hour trip, Kate and I arrived jetlagged but ready to get to work! We met up with Thomas from the World Federation of Hemophilia to go over what was expected from us during the meetings, and we met the SHAD team the next morning.

The people in Malawi are quite possibly the nicest people I have ever met. Everyone was welcoming and were ready to help!

From left to right are:

  • Brian: A clinician at the local hospital who has hemophilia
  • Robin: HACA Program Manager
  • Chimwemwe: The CEO of SHAD and a mom of 3 boys, 2 of which have hemophilia
  • Kate: HACA Board Member
  • Thomas: WFH representative and regional manager in Africa
  • Dr. Mlombe: The HTC doctor at Kamuzu Central Hospital
  • Francis: Nurse at the HTC that is in charge of the day-to-day running of the HTC as well as factor distribution to the rest of the country. He is also in charge of the sickle cell and diabetes departments and other related conditions.

There are three HTCs in Malawi, and it is Francis's job to make sure they have enough factor for the approximately 100 hemophiliacs in the country. He is also on the sickle cell board and is in charge of the diabetes patients. The HTC that we were able to visit was opened in 2016, and consist of two rooms in the outpatient ward of the hospital.

Looking Ahead

The next step to the twinning process is to fill out the application and return it by Oct. 1st.  We will then be told by the end of the year if our twinning request was accepted or not.  Some of the goals that SHAD wants to work on in 2027 include:

  • Updating their website
  • Community outreach
  • Educational flyers and health passport books
  • Fundraising for a new computer and printer
  • Having their first in person program

We are so excited to be sharing this journey with them and will keep you updated after our application is submitted!
